Itinerary

Departure to the Sillar Route: We begin our tour from the city of Arequipa heading toward the quarries where sillar originated.

Añashuayco Quarry: We arrive in approximately 45 minutes at Añashuayco Quarry, one of the most representative points of the route.
Here we can appreciate an immense canyon with cliffs (ignimbrite walls) formed by the extraction of sillar. The guide will explain:

  • The history of sillar
  • Its production process
  • Its architectural use from colonial times to the present

At this point, you can also observe the impressive Mega-Carving of the Church of the Society of Jesus, sculpted by the stonemasons themselves as a display of their art and tradition.

Quebrada de Culebrillas: Afterwards, we move to Quebrada de Culebrillas, located 30 minutes from Añashuayco.
Upon arrival, we take an approximately 20-minute walk inside the small natural canyon formed by the passage of water. Its walls reach between 15 and 20 meters in height and rise progressively as we move forward.
At the end of the tour, you can observe petroglyphs made by the Wari culture more than a thousand years ago, evidence of pre-Hispanic occupation in the area.

Andean Apachetas: Before returning to the city, we observe the traditional Apachetas, stone formations placed one over another as an ancestral symbol of gratitude to nature and a request for good fortune.
These structures convey a mystical feeling and represent the Andean spiritual connection with Pachamama.

Return to Arequipa: We finish the tour returning to the city.
